This course provides learners with a basic introduction to the decorating trade.As a painter and decorator, no two jobs are exactly the same. You will need to work with lots of different tools and materials and will need to know your products well.You will study handling and storing materials, using working platforms, protecting working areas, preparing surfaces for decorating, and applying decorating materials. You will be continually assessed in practical skills and theory.

Entry Criteria

No formal requirements for entry to this course. A good level of English and maths is beneficial.

Additional Costs

You will need to purchase a bib, brace, overalls and safety footwear for practical sessions. You will have the opportunity to purchase these at the start of term at approximately £12.00 each.

Study Aims

This course aims to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to work in construction. The units studied develop both written and practical skills for the workplace. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills in a real working environment. You will have the opportunity to build many transferable skills, both theoretical and practical, as well as a sound knowledge and understanding of key processes and techniques used.

  • Knowledge of Technical Information, Quantities and Communication with Others
  • Knowledge of Construction Technology
  • Erect and Dismantle Access Equipment and Working Platform
  • Prepare Common Surface Types for Decoration
  • Apply Basic Paint Systems by Brush and Roller
  • Apply Foundation and Plain Papers
  • Produce Standard Decorative Finishes.

Times of Delivery

This course is typically delivered three days a week between 8.45am and 5pm, depending on your maths and English requirements.

Any times indicated are based on current courses and may be subject to change in future years. Full timetables will be confirmed at the start of each course.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be assessed on each unit through online multiple-choice exams and practical based synoptic tests.

All assessments are designed to mirror real life work tasks in the industry.

You will be assigned a tutor to support your learning throughout the course. You will also have access to a Personal Learning Coach (PLC) for additional support.

The study programme is designed to allow you to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter regional and national competition, and will gain hands-on experience with a work placement.
