FREE (If meet residency criteria and not enrolled at another educational institution).

If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course will be FREE. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips.

If you are aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course could be free dependant on the level of the course and your eligibility criteria. Are you living with a disability and/or learning disability and looking for your next steps in education that will help to prepare you for adulthood?

This Preparing for Independence in the Workplace course aims to help young people with a disability and/or learning disability make a successful transition from education to adulthood, with an additional focus on developing work ready skills for progression to Employment or a Supported Internship.

You will develop your communication skills, customer service skills, problem solving skills, time management, and independent living skills to support this progression into the workplace.

Each student will take part in a Work Placement to practice the skills gained and develop their independence in travelling to and from new places.

Developed to support young people, each bespoke programme is designed to meet the individual needs of a student. Alongside your course you will work towards developing your Maths and English, Personal Development and Enrichment.

No formal requirements for entry to this course.

Additional Costs

An additional small cost may incur for enrichment trips and visits.

What are the next steps?

All applicants will be required to attend an interview prior to enrolment, a meet the tutor session will be then arranged for a later date.

Study Aims

The qualification aims to develop skills valued by employers and are in demand in the workplace, it also develops knowledge related to employability and the work environment.

Modules Studied

Learners will take part in 10 units to complete the qualification.

The 10 units that learners will participate in are the following:

  • Completing a Job Application Form
  • Exploring Types of Employment Contract
  • Taking Part in an Interview
  • Respecting Equality and Diversity in the Workplace
  • Recognising Rights and Responsibilities at Work
  • Considering Career Entry Requirements
  • Know How Literacy Skills are Used in the Workplace
  • Know How Numeracy Skills are Used in the Workplace
  • Exploring the Use of the Internet and Digital Media in the Workplace
  • Using IT to Collect and Share Information at Work
  • Exploring Teamwork in the Workplace
  • Responding to Customer Needs
  • Recognising Work-related Problems
  • Participate in Work-related Experiences
  • Being Environmentally Aware in the Workplace
  • Taking Part in an Enterprise Activity

Times of Delivery

The sessions will be timetabled over approximately 3-4 days which will also include maths, English, digital skills and personal development sessions.

Any times indicated are based on current courses and may be subject to change in future years. Full timetables will be confirmed at the start of each course.

Teaching and Assessment

All theory and practical sessions will be delivered in classrooms with IT facilities. Assessment will be internally set and conducted through assignments, portfolios, observation and question & and sessions.

Maths and English

All learners who have not achieved a grade 4 in maths and English will be required to continue studying these until they achieve a GCSE grade 4 or Level 2 Functional Skills.

Placement

To support with your learning and employability skills, we encourage our learners to take part in a work placement to develop confidence and progression throughout the course.
